Why Boise Yards Hold Water
Boise sits in a high desert, so drainage problems here catch a lot of homeowners off guard. But water in this valley doesn't behave like the rainfall totals suggest. The city is laced with irrigation canals, ditches and laterals that run full all summer, seeping into the surrounding ground. Neighborhoods on the Bench that were flood-irrigated farmland a couple of generations ago still carry that water in the soil, and lots near an active ditch can stay wet long after the last storm.
Closer to the Boise River — through the North End's river-adjacent blocks, near the Greenbelt and into Garden City — the water table can ride close to the surface, especially during spring runoff when the river runs high. Crawl spaces and basements in those areas often show dampness that has nothing to do with the roof or the gutters. And in the foothills, a single hard thunderstorm can send sheet runoff down a slope faster than any lawn can absorb it, cutting channels and dumping silt against foundations at the bottom.
Freeze-thaw cycles finish the job: water that stands against concrete through a Boise winter works its way into every crack, then expands. The fix is rarely one product — it's grading, collection and discharge working together.
